Our goal is to build a cohort of Amherst alumni to help resist any encroachment on the institutional independence and the academic freedom of our college. In Fall 2025, Amherst faculty approved a statement in full support of the college’s determination to preserve its educational mission. We believe alumni also have a vital role in adopting similar resolutions whenever necessary to protect the future of Amherst. You may already be aware of the multiple attacks on American colleges and universities over the last year by the current administration, including the withdrawal of billions of dollars of federal funding, coercion regarding the diversity admission of students and faculty hiring, increased oversight of course content, the promotion of certain purity tests, and proposals to revamp the accreditation system of higher education generally—to name just a few  of these  initiatives. 

Amherst’s academic freedom is ultimately dependent upon the academic freedom of all our sister institutions: an attack on any one is also an attack on Amherst.
